Dr Michael Johns


Senior Partner at Cowplain Family Practice. Involved in training the next generation of GPs – who will work here for a year at a time. Born in London but also lived in Yorkshire and South Wales. I went to Medical School in Cardiff and after a variety of training jobs became a Partner in Cowplain Family Practice in 1989 and moved into the area. Also for many years I have been involved in management work for the PCT, commissioning a wide variety of things including hospital and community services. Married with two children, I like all outdoor activities including cycling (usually with wife), swimming and SCUBA diving.

Dr Nicola Millen


I have been a full-time partner at Cowplain Family Practice since 1992. I am the diabetes and research lead in the practice. I co-ordinate the teaching of medical students in the practice, currently from Southampton University, which involves the whole of the clinical team. I am married with 3 children (twins +1), enjoy cycling and walking (gentle, country), painting and sailing with my family.

Dr Tim Wright


I qualified in 1998 and have been with Cowplain Family Practice for 11 years. I am a GP appraiser and a medical student tutor. I am also Clinical Director for the local Out of Hours Service. I’m married with three children and particularly enjoy cycling and sailing. 

Dr Emma Bridger


I qualified in 2001 and before joining Cowplain Family Practice, I worked in the hospitals locally and for 6 years at The Portsdown Group Practice. I have an interest in women’s health and teaching medical students. I have a young family who keep me very busy when not working. If I ever get any spare time I can often be seen running up hills locally!

Dr Anthony Renton


Dr Renton joined Cowplain Family Practice as a GP partner in September 2014.

Dr Wee Fong Teo


Dr Teo joined Cowplain Family Practice on 1st October 2016. His special areas of interest are General Medicine, Treatment of Diabetes, Cardiovascular and Respiratory Diseases. He is also a GP Trainer.

Dr Kathryn Carey-Jones

RCGP, BM, BSc(Hons)

I qualified as a doctor in 2009 and joined Cowplain Family Practice as a Partner in 2019. My areas of interest are acute/emergency medicine, research and injectable medications. As well as being a GP Partner I am a Research Fellow conducting clinical trials to improve the future treatment of patient's in primary care. Away from the practice you may find me in the acute setting or on the Solent as I have a love of water sports

Dr Susan Stanley


GP at Queenswood Surgery. I qualified in 1986 and have been a partner at Queenswood since 1990. I enjoy the wide variety of General Practice and have been involved in training Nurses and Doctors and appraisal of professional colleagues in the East Hants Area. As well as being a full time GP I have two grown up children and enjoy gardening, walking and playing the piano.

Dr Caroline Williams


GP at Queenswood Surgery. I trained in London and qualified in 1996. Worked in Battersea for 8 years and have also worked in Queensland Australia. Moved to Hampshire with my family in 2011. I work part-time . My interests are sexual health and contraception. I am also a GP trainer.

Dr Rachel Meller


GP at Queenswood Surgery. After completing my training, I have worked for a number of practices in the North East and now on the South Coast. I am interested in women's health, contraception and mental health. I spend my free time with my young family.

Nurse Manager

Helen Wiseman

Nurse Manager at Cowplain Family Practice and Queenswood Surgery. Registered Nurse since 1998, worked at Queen Alexander and St Mary's Hospital in general medicine and paediatrics and then specialising in haematology for several years. Practice Nurse since 2009, with a special interest in education, training, family planning, asthma management and wound care. Newly appointed Practice Nurse Manager and joined the practice in June 2016.

Respiratory Nurse

Chris Fehrenbach

Chris is a Respiratory Nurse Specialist who joined the practice in 2011. Prior to this she was Respiratory Matron at Queen Alexandra Hospital. She has over 30 years experience caring for people with lung disease. She has lectured both at Portsmouth and Southampton university, and also has extensive research experience. Undertakes the role of Nurse Advisor to the British Lung Foundation.

Diabetes Nurse Specialist

Caryl Goldstone

Diabetes Nurse Specialist I qualified as a RGN in Plymouth 1994 and after initially working in a wide range of hospital areas, I moved to Portsmouth and into Primary Care in 2002. Since then I have worked as a Practice Nurse in a surgery in Portchester and during this time developed a keen interest in diabetes. I qualified as a Nurse Independent Prescriber in 2018 and moved to Oaks Healthcare in 2019, where I have taken on the role of Diabetes Specialist Nurse. A member of the Queens Nursing Institute, outside of work I enjoy keeping fit, socialising and walking in the country with my family and dog.

Nurse practitioners

Helen Roach

Nurse Practitioner joined the practice in April 2020. Qualified as a nurse in 2001 working in various hospital and community settings before changing careers to work in General Practice. Is trained to assess and treat patients who attend the surgery with minor illnesses or who require a home visit. Is unable to treat under 2's or pregnant ladies.

Di Wilde

Advanced Nurse Practitioner Joined the practice in July 2017. Working across both sites. Di is a trained specialist nurse who can provide treatment and advice for many problems for which you may have seen a doctor for in the past. Main areas of expertise are in the management of common illnesses and long term conditions. Di cannot treat children under the age of 2 years, or expectant mothers, both of whom are referred to a doctor.

Lisa Cleeve

I have been nursing for 10 years and first began working at Southampton General Hospital in 2008 on Cardiothoracic ward. After 2 years I decided to move closer to home and ended up working on the Combined Haematology Oncology Unit at Queen Alexandra Hospital. I worked here until I had my daughter in 2012, and went straight into primary care in 2013. I joined Cowplain Family Practice October 2018.

Penelope Hensman

Penny joined the practice in October 2017 and has worked in General Practice for over 20 years. Works across both Cowplain Family Practice and Queenswood Surgery

Chloe Ford

I joined the practice in 2006 as a Healthcare Assistant and Receptionist. As my training progressed, I decided to undertake my nursing training at the University of Southampton and qualified in September 2017. I started as a Practice Nurse in September 2017 working across both sites, undertaking clinics and treatment room duties I am qualified to do dressings, phlebotomy, injections, ear care, contraception. This is constantly changing as I increase my knowledge, training and my competencies. I will soon be expanding my role being able to complete compression, dopplers and cervical cytology screening.

Hayley Quildan

Registered Nurse at Cowplain Family Practice. Qualified in 2013. She has been working on the Renal Unit. Hayley is able to undertake treatment room duties and will soon be expanding her role into chronic disease management.

Mandy Rooks

Practice Nurse, Joined the practice in 2013. Able to see patients for chronic management and undertake general treatment room duties.

Healthcare Assistant Kim Joined the surgery in February 2016 as a member of the reception team. Has now moved across into a clinical role within the practice and until recently, has been our Phlebotomist. . Now is progressing her training to become a healthcare assistant.

Healthcare Assistant at Cowplain Family Practice with over 20 years experience in the NHS. Specialise in wound care, life style advice and phlebotomy. Come from a community and district nursing background.

Healthcare Assistant, Specialises in ECGs, Lifestyle advice and Phlebotomy.

District/Community Nurses

Our District/Community Nurses operate out of Denmead Health Centre. They provide skilled care for patients who are unable to get to the surgery. They are trained to assess the needs of the elderly for services in their own home. They report to the doctors and are overseen by the Community Matron. Telephone 02392 238112.
